OUTDATED THOUGHTS

How We Can Change Them

Despite people with Downs Syndrome being given the right to have an education from 1971 with the Education Act which officially deemed every child educable and despite in 2015, a committee being set up to look into the Equality Act 2010 to study whether the Act was having an impact on those with disabilities- there are still those looking upon people with Downs Syndrome through prejudicial eyes. Parents used to be told that their children were 'better dead', and parents are still told that their child with Downs Syndrome will probably not lead a full life. We want to address the fact that those with Downs Syndrome can still perform, direct and even write high quality shows or pieces of theatre and that drama and performing can be a way to enhance a person with Downs syndrome’s life: socially and personally. We strongly believe it is the right of those with Downs Syndrome to make their own career paths and to do so with no prejudice or discrimination against them. We want to focus on people with Downs Syndrome and the abilities that they bring to drama and theatre as opposed to focusing on their disabilities.
